Process: I heart milk

I have had a photograph of this little girl above my desk for a quite a while now. And so when I was looking for my next project recently I turned to her.  I wanted to challenge myself – to concentrate on the face, and to play with how I coloured.

After a few warm up sketches, I drew this and then added a little colour…

Then it got to this…

Then this…

It is a bit of change and a push forward for me I hope. When I did the first sketch my husband said that it was ‘so you’. At each stage I felt like it was finished, but then I tried pushing it a little further to see what happened. I’m not really sure which I like best.  Maybe the middle one?

PS. I’ve been listening to the podcasts over at Escape from Illustration Island at the moment and have been really enjoying them... if you are after some illustration inspiration or are interested in what it's like to be an illustrator you might like these interviews.

Yikes - thank you! If I admit it to myself, I'm actually really nervous about these...I'm really hoping people will like them... so yay! I'm so happy you do :) Would love to know which one you prefer of the three if you have a moment...

I like the middle one the best but only because her little blue outfit begins to blend in to the blue background at the top and not showcase the outfit and milk as much. It absolutely amazes me you actually do these by hand. They are gorgeous.

awww, beautiful. I like them all. I don't think this is a situation where less is more. The third with the blue makes her eyes so wide and pretty, I think. So lovely.

THAT IS BEAUTIFUL! I love them all, do you illustrate on your computer or what medium are you using?
I featured you on my blog last week

Your stuff is awesome!

Thanks Victoria :) I was wondering about that.

And thanks Candace! I use a combination of techniques - for this one I did the sketch/linework in pencil and then coloured it digitally. Sometimes I also use acrylics or watercolours to paint to, or put in some final pencil work at the end. I'm off to look at your blog again :)

Thanks Nihan!

For this one I used a combination - a hand drawn sketch, Photoshop and Illustrator. Often I just use a ink drawing and Photoshop.
